I think it is indeed about simplicity, through the last times of a war veteran who came to live by more simple things in life. At first I thought wether he had to put his dreams aside or lived up to it was up to the listener, but I'd go for the former given the general tone and specific moments in the song ("we'll never go to town, till we bury every dream in the cold cold ground", The piano is firewood, Times Square is a dream, I find we'll lay down together in the cold, cold ground" for example) The song also expresses the sadness of a life lived in a microcosm in a way, given the predominance and imminence of death, but it may simply be romancing a lifestyle near gone now. Could also be just about old people who put their dream aside and get more and more bitter while approaching the grave, as we will all end up in the "Cold cold ground" and not everyone can meet their own expectations in life. Brilliant and moving piece of music anyway. |
