I think this is about a person who lost her faith in god, who wasn’t there for her when she needed support. She made her way through by herself, and after many years still has a slight connection to god. As she faces the end she wants to let that connection go and face whatever is next on her own terms. |

The first time I heard this song it embedded itself in my mind. The music is haunting, superlative. What I got from the lyrics is an image of a US gunboat going up a river in Vietnam Nam. The locals are going about their lives, some like Big John with some very personal issues. The gunboat doesn’t care, it’s just an agent of destruction. A young life is lost. What would it be like if foreign gunboats came up our rivers and killed us? Thankfully/hopefully that’s not something we have to deal with, at least at the present and likely ever. |
