| The Sugarcubes – Regina Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| This song is about the weary traveler (Regina) coming home to Johnny (Iceland--the land itself). Iceland is small but with extremely varied terrain: red volcanic soil, dusty desert, basalt cliffs and wet forests. Bjork and her band mates were very sensitive to how popular music was expected to sound like music from other places, e.g., the US, UK, Europe, etc. She and the band wanted to create original music with an original sound that was unique to Iceland. The band added specific references to legendary travelers, as ladylena07 points out above, to add an air of epic voyage. The lobster references are--I think--their way of stating they were completely different from the rest of the world; lobster is a delicacy everywhere--but not Iceland. They do have a local lobster-like dish, but it's actually a langoustine (large shrimp) and not a true lobster. The underlying message was "keep your lobster...we don't even like it." | |
