| Madonna – Oh Father Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| @[mikeygoestohollywood:28036] I don't think she means to note physical abuse from her father in the song or video but, of course, the video/lyrics does speak to child abuse big time. I think in context to Madonna, in the video, she is struggling with losing the connection with her father after her mother's death. He becomes angry and starts drinking; she in a way loses her father when she loses her mother. The broken relationship with her father leads to the abusive (emotionally and physically) relationship with the husband. In the end she is able to walks away from the relationship with her husband while OR because of fixing the relationship with her father. | |

I've always associated the song with that of a survivor of abuse (domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, etc). The abuser lies, breaks the victim down. The victim can't get away completely whether it be physically or emotionally but there's some light there. Some hope there ... for an escape eventually. While I'm sure the movie definitely had a good part in id, I do feel like part of it was inspired by Madonna's own childhood and marriage. When she did the "Like a Prayer" album, she tied together Live to Tell with Oh Father and mentioned the father/husband connection. |
