I like how you can relate the unnamed feeling to anything. any emotion as multiple people habe interrpreted. I really relate to the anger aspect, maybe I always see that because it just fits me. but the whole line, "I want to hate it all away" fits. you get so overwhelmed with insert unamed feeling here (fear, sorrow, anger, rage, etc...) and you do feel like you want to explode so you reject everything and everyone. It really does drive you insane. |

James talks of his early days just feeling alienated. Losing both parents at a young age. the whole thing with the God-will-heal-all religion shit. what was that called? Christian science? Basically he felt different. I'd bet this is about him from that starting period amd continued a bit throughout school. Maybe being bullied a bit. Not feeling comfortable talking to people because you learn they let you down and just throw your vulnerability back in your face. so you cut off everyone. fuck them all. you get bitter but you still long/need human interaction hence the lyric, "I'm okay, but please dont stray too far." Feeling like you do all the right things or the things your supposed to do, yet you're constantly rejected hence, "dealing with the shame and the pain." You start to question yourself and your self worth. Not exactly knowing what but assured something is off with you and evident by the laughter, the jokes, the tormenting. This melts into the anger and bitterness. Follow this long enough and it becomes a tug of war in your head of keeping yourself at bay or unloading. Your experiences thus far quite justify your mentality of torment or be tormented. |

| Metallica – St. Anger Lyrics

Hey everyone. New to this and don't know if anyone comes here anymore... but for me (and I assumed I shared the same meaning as the band...Hetfield specifically though obviously there are different interpretations) I look at it in a relatable way. St. Anger... being angry, overeacting, holding grudges, etc...or just being angry all the time is so big, that it's a God or saint. Another way of putting it is having anger issues is a big monkey on your back and no good... "st anger round my neck", like if you do not get a handle on your issues, the anger is going to end you, or kill you... not necessarily a literal death either. "I feel my world shake like an earthquake, hard to see clear" I'm madly in anger with you" world shaking like an earthquake is what it feels like when you are angry or in a rage. speaking more of the struggle. how you fight to not be an angry psycho all the time bit keep falling into that black cloud of anger and the struggle is frustrating. "medallian noose, I hang myself" you are mad at everyone else yet you know you are the only one to blame, you're doing this whole thing to yourself. "i want my anger to be healthy, i need to set my anger free" if you dont set your anger free you'll red line soon and blow a fucking gasket. But St. Anger is still around your neck, so you continue to struggle. within the struggle, because you seemingly continue to struggle and fail over and over again its hard to break the cycle. "I want my anger to be healthy" to me relates to you (or I...rather) desperately trying to hold onto the validity of where certain aspects of your anger were manifested from. Meaning you (or I, ha) hate that your intense vibes often overshadow the principles that sparked your anger in the first place, which are actually quite pertenant, of only delivered in a more politic way.
I dont know. I really love this album. It grooves so much. I am a long time (lifetime) Metallica fan, and can find meaning in virtually all of their songs. |
