This song is not about rape or any kind of male domination over a woman. If you know anything about Barry Gibb, you know that he is a hopeless romantic by his songwriting. He’s been one of the premier pop love song writers in the music industry since the 1960s. He is also a family man, having been happily married to the same woman since 1970 whom he has had five children with. He has absolutely no history of being any kind of sexual predator or abuser. Now, on the other hand, Gibb has always used a great deal of metaphors in his songwriting throughout the Bee Gees’ career, which was typical of old school songwriters. They didn’t write songs as literally like they do nowadays. This entire song is a bunch of war, battle or fighting metaphors but make no mistake, it is a love song without a doubt. In the relationship he is referring to, his girl has become emotionally unresponsive, calloused and abusive towards him (probably because she has lost her original feelings of romance for him). However, he believes that their love is worth saving and he is setting out to woo her back into being in love with him. The song is filled with metaphors about battles or war. Phrases like “break down your defenses” and “lay your fortress open wide” are metaphors for breaking through to her emotionally so they do not lose the love they’ve had together. Even the line “nobody stops this body from taking you” is a play on words around the word “body”. But if you look closely you will see all of the war/battle/fight metaphors in the song. This is the whole crux of the song. He is saying that he will win this battle of love (breaking through to her emotionally) and he will defeat her (win her over so that they will stop bickering and fighting) and in doing this “SHE” will be the one to win. By him emotionally winning her over again, she will in fact be the winner because their love will be good again. |
