@[zadillo:27935] is exactly on the right track. The story of Aphrodite and Adonis is complicated to say the least, but in Greek Mythology, the passing of the seasons comes from Aphrodite and Persephone, queen of Hades (The Underworld), passing off guardianship of Apollo (important detail, he's the sun). My theory is that Mercer is using the legends of Aphrodite and Apollo to heighten the drama about the end to summer in Portland, when the clouds come in during September. "A song in the tree has distracted her mind Some other curious form of life Has made its presence to her known And she coos so gently, soft and low The shining face in a million reflections On tiny raindrops that fall in a veil Over our city like notes from above It overwhelms me I just ain't that tough" This is describing Aphrodite (summer) finding Apollo (the sun) just before she gives him to Persephone (winter). Apollo is shining on a veil of rain This is probably the most elaborate way you could possibly ever describe a rainbow and how overwhelmingly beautiful it was for Mercer. He compares the passing of the seasons to the waxing and waning of his relationship with his (now) wife, how he feels the first six months of euphoria wearing off, but he knows this woman is special and worth the inevitable hard times. It's not a direct comparison to Aphrodite and Apollo so much as the passing of the seasons. |
