@[toadtws:32010] I agree about that last part, I think it refers to a sort of chemical spill accident. Something to do with the great molasses flood in boston 1919. "Stinks of marmelade"... I think our guy was a sailor caught on the flood, and the motorway comes all the way from the port, spreading the overly sweet smell. The cold gray weather of boston makes is all harder and slower. On the other hand, the begining perhaps is about anticipation and frustration. Hiding pain, and comming to acceptance. Our little gymnast lost someone and has to move on with her life. |

Meloy said it has historical references... So here is my guess: Poor gymnast, lives in a very cold place, north of boston, she is beside herself but keeps praticing hard on the trapeze routine, and falling like a tree "timber down", with ankles spread apart on the stage, all tied up in ballet shoes, and in her ballet costume made of tarlatan (= hard tulle). In her mind, she was already on the floor, "she long has arrived"... Note: Those are garments that appear to be delicate from outside but are very discomfortable, even painfull to use. Tarlatan is also used to make bride dresses... so perhaps they were getting married that winter. It is already mid april, (april marches on) and weather is still holding cold and gray. Her lover is not comming back. But the show must go on until the winter ends, so her skinny (lanky) sister says. she is probably a gymnast too. They are hoping the light (sun, summer) will bring some relief. The gymnast is depressed and losing weight since she learned that her lover is dead and there´s no hope to waiting for him at the docks anymore. Her lover was a commander on a ship (bosun), and lost his compass, meaning he can´t come back. He is one of those dead in a great "chemical spill" tragedy, back in january 1919. When a thunder storm hit the port of boston, and the molasses tank exploded on the docks, killing 21 people, that drowned in the molasses "marmelade". And for miles and miles, the motorway stinks of marmelade, a very "chemical kind" of smell. Probably very strong and sickening at the time. Some people say it´s sweet reek can be smelled even today on a very hot day. The "lighthouse shine , the calm tide" means he´s found peace , gone to heaven. The "lights upon your eye" can refer to tears or to be in shock. |

Mother ocean sings to her 'children' about how all kinds of life came from the oceans - and are all siblings from her point of view. Curious facts about the verse : " Hawks and sparrows race in my waters Stingrays are floating across the sky " Isn´t it remarcable that hawks fly very high, sparrows don´t, and stingrays live on the bottom of the sea, but all those creatures feed from ocean´s little creatures racing above the surface of the water, and all of them sort of have 'wings' ? did you guys know that stingrays jump out in the air ? they actually kind of fly ! There are also the flying fish (Exocoetidae) that is often mistaken by sparrows. it´s suxh a poetic observation of the evolutionary point of view. what a beautiful song <3 |

This is as straight as it gets. About divorce. Her tears literally turned to stone when it concerns her daughter´s well being. 'Solomon´s tale' is a childbook about a cat coping with family crisis, separation and rebirth. It was probably recomended by a psychologist. She won´t let the mysoginistic mind of the ex-husband get to her daughter. He learned it from his father. This thoughts and behaviours of patriarchy are cruel and have to end. |

@[ilikegreen:27926] Oh no dear . If I may object ... if you think poetry is something light and delicate, you are not reading enough poetry. Romantic sonnets are light and delicate. Poetry is a text that makes you feel things. Not always good things. Often dramatic, and unsettling. If it makes you think about it for a long time, that´s good poetry. Also, Paganism reminds me of flower crowns and sorority and natural medicine recipes. Nothing cruel or satanic. Nothing personal okay? Just open your mind a litlte more ... A "pagan poetry" is an ungodly poetry, non-religious verses, a forbidden theme. A poetry that could not be tamed by the church. In this case, a Poetry about Porn or Sex. It seems to me that many people are judging this song based on the video. The video is, yes, about an incontrolable selfless love that becomes self-destructive as she exposes herself and sews and beads and embelishes her own body with piercings, pearls and plastic and tartalans, making a rather fetishist dress sewn into her own body. Which means to fully surrender oneself in order to please the lover. Then she makes crazy looks and displays faces of ectasy, and joy and pain and desire and doubt. but again, that is the Video. Not the song. Now let´s look at the song. Please note that the hole song has a 'musicbox' touch to it,The melody has a witchcraft feeling to it, but it is also kind of naive and light. It suggests a bit of suspense. On the other hand there is a deep serious bassline that adds drama. And it is fully encoded in eletronic music instruments. there is no harp or violins , only coded sounds made in a modern eletronic "musicbox". "peddaling through the dark currents" means "exploring the underground artistic scene." "I find an accutate copy. a blueprint of the pleasure in me" = she meets someone that looks like the person of her dreams . That fits her definition of what she thinks it´s Hot. A blueprint is a technical drawing that follows very specific rules. in this case, the list of things she desires in a lover. What is he doing ? He is the DJ. Spinning records. "swirling black lillies totally ripe." Black lillies are big exotic flowers that open up completely like a disc or a plate and have a pin in the middle. Vinyl records. (maybe it is about bjork´s former lover, maybe not.) Vinyl records play sounds because they have the "secret code carved." those carved codes are read by the tip of the needle and transformed into eletric signals... The guy offers a unusual handshake , much like many music "crews" use, which she finds amusing . "Crooked five fingers that form a pattern yet to be mached." It may all seem quite ordinary on the given conext. A party, a club, a handsome DJ who touched her in a unique way ... but now she is secretly aroused (Horny, to use a more pagan word) , and starts to have very naughty thoughts. "on the surface simplicity , but the darkest pit in me is pagan poetry." and she falls in love with him and starts to believe she loves him. Morse coded signals, pulsate, they wake me up from my hibernate - it is actually a reference to the elements in the music production, that are all new to her - and that´s why she says she was hibernating . she was not aware of the new things going on in the " dark currents", the underground music scene. this new sounds make her feel new things and have new ideas. (in fact this theme of exploring new kinds of music is shown in many other songs from her previous album, such as "Headphones") She is afraid of being rejected or hurt and tries to refrain herself from showing off her feelings. "this time I´m gonna keep it all to myself" but that "blueprint of lust"of a guy, looks so gorgeous and tempting ... "but he makes me want to hand myself over!" he makes me want to show my feelings , surrender , give myself to him. see? not so dark and dreadfull. nothing to do with drug adiction or self harm. |
