I think the song is talking about youth, at least the romanticized version sold to everyone through commercial products. I think she's comparing it a romantic relationship too. Her chorus says repeatedly, "how can anyone have you? how can anyone have you but lose you? how can anyone have you but lose you and not lose their mind too?" and I think it's the crazy illusive carrot, the unattainable goal that most people, in particular women, experience. The emphasis on appearance for women is enough to drive people insane and I think the artist captures this struggle in the chorus. Even when she points to herself as the "monster and you're my sacred cow" it really seems like she's pursuing something perfect, perfection itself, god-like even. It's no wonder it's never attained and frankly her next lines of "oh I can keep running no I can keep running" leads me to think she's trying to convey what most people do "try to keep up with the Johnsons or in this case the Kardashians might be a more accurate comparison. I'm not completely convinced about this but I think in the last verse when she talks about "I guess that's just me, honey, I guess that's how I'm built I try to tell you I love you and it comes out all sick", I think she's suggesting in her pursuit of trying to attain physical perfection, it comes out sick meaning she may be bulimic in an effort to be "perfect". Personally I love the melody and riffs and sound over all. She makes the song sound like a love song, like an infatuation. It wasn't until I read the lyrics that I saw the connection. Modern society, at least in the US has idolized youth to the point of infatuation and unattainable happiness due to the commercialization of said youth. How can anyone have the so called happiness tied to youth? It seems like only the very wealthy and fortunate get it yet everyone has youth at some point in their lives which leads to the next question. How can anyone have you but lose you? And of course the final question, how can anyone have you but lose you and not lose their minds too? I think the song is just pointing out how much we drive ourselves crazy pursuing impossible standards and never appreciating what we have in the process because it's lost before we realize it. Yet, in the end most people don't lose their minds, it just feels like it. Much like the feelings of infatuation that make love seem like such a desperate thing. I think she captures the futility of meeting societal standards perfectly. I just wasn't expecting that deep of a message from a song. |
