In my opinion I’ve been listening to this song since I was 12 and its always meant the same thing to me: Basically he’s poor as a beginning rock star but he’s leaving his home town on a train, leaving his Mom behind to chase his dreams. He’s talking in past tense with “it’s been a long time” so at the time of writing the song he’s already “made it”. It’s a motivating song to me about him taking a huge chance to be successful but it clearly works out for him. |

This is one of my favorite rap songs by Ice Cube. This song in my opinion is basically talking about how he’s living the gangsta rap life style but people are mad at him for the things he does and how he lives his life. He mentions people getting to much into his personal life so much that they can “smell his calogn”. He then proceeds to say those who judge him are living as hypocrites with “pistols and preaching”. He also mentions “old money” which I believe he is talking about the god fathers of gangsters of the 20-30’s and that they’re still around but no one talks about them. A lot of Ice Cube’s music seems to be about how rappers although what they do isn’t good they’re not the worst of enemies out there with politicians, god fathers of gangsters, etc. |

What the song: “Don’t Follow” by Alice In Chains means to me is that it reminds me of the stories my Dad told me about his teenage and early 20’s growing up. I won’t share what he did and the experiences he had but every time the song goes to it’s more “upbeat” tempo it makes me cry because the lyrics not only describe what my Dads life was like back then it also resembles what my life is like right now. (Not talking about suicide or drug addiction, but other hard things.) Like they say, “Like father like son” I guess.. Alice In Chains is one of the very best bands who ever played. Yes they’re depressing but they’re lyrical sound is so uniquely good. |
