I think this song is about coming out. My mom was the one who interpreted it this way and told me about it and I agree with her. "And I drove out of there With no one behind me Feeling funny and free" Could symbolize getting it off their chest and feeling funny and free, even though no one supported them. "All you pretty pretenders Negligent vendors Aren't you precious inside?" Could symbolize other people who haven't come out yet, pretending they're someone they aren't. "I have no need for anger With intimate strangers And I got nothing to hide" Maybe 'intimate strangers' means family and friends who are intimate but considered strangers too because they don't truly know who they are. Having nothing to hide seems like being truthful about who you are. "I laughed as I said it This is my situation It's not pictures or privilege It's just self preservation I don't want you to feel Any obligation" Could symbolize being care-free as they get it off their chest, self preservation as a reason for keeping it hidden for so long (a lot of people do this). Not wanting them to feel any obligation could mean a 'take it or leave it, I don't care how you feel about it but this is my truth' sort of thing. "We act empty and innocent But we are fueled by distortions (I remember you) Of lives led in discontent (When we were shiny and new) Trading misfortunes (Now you guard your faith) 'Cause faith is one thing That is hard to deliver" The definition of distortion is 'the action of giving a misleading account or impression.' Could symbolize keeping that part of who you are hidden. Faith and religion are big reasons people aren't more accepting of things like this. Just my interpretation :) |
