Leonard Cohen – Sisters of Mercy Lyrics 7 years ago
There’s something really interesting going on with the instrumentation going on during this song. It takes an arc, including starting with simple folk guitar, then cranking up to include a children’s set of bells, then a bit of children’s carnival guest gutsy and winding down to conclude with folk guitar. Fine, subtle musical background that is a suitable setting for L.C.’s genius lyrics.

Paul Simon – American Tune Lyrics 7 years ago
The evening in early November 2016 it was announced Trump had won, American Tune popped into my head. Over the next 24 hours I must have listened to Paul Simon (and Willie Nelson, too, in a great cover in which Simon himself played guitar) sing American Tune at least 10 times. Sadly, but somehow comforting, the lyrics fit - like putting on a 40 year old suit that surprisingly fits perfectly, but fails to lift your spirits. Boy oh boy, do we ever live in the “age’s most uncertain hour.” And our times match the immigrant experiences the song refers to. Sad the song is more than ever a song for the present, but so very grateful Simon gifted us with it.
