Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Crowd Surf off a Cliff Lyrics 7 years ago
I think the interp that it's about her dad, the poet, Paul Haines makes the most sense.

However, when I first heard the song, and every time after stretching out over years, that first line (cursed with a love you can't express) always made me cry.

To me (cursed with a love you can't express) can be about anyone, anything, any any any. To have an unexpressible love for anything is painful, because you want to express it so badly that it hurts to be misunderstood or hear your words or art come out, maybe it comes out distorted. Unable to grasp your loves' truth and share it, it's like being itchy in your internal organs. The love swells and applies pressure, fit to bursting, but the pressure won't release except as tears.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The Lottery Lyrics 7 years ago
I always heard (sexual suicide) and thought it meant choosing not to have children. That aligns with (a new crime) and the bit about the history of feminism. It was traditionally an obligation and large social pressure for people to have children. Not having any is suicide, not passing on the code. Haines passes the code on through her music instead. I don't know if that's her angle, but I've always thought I would commit sexual suicide in this way and just adopt. Escaping the cycle.

I'd give props to ebdavidson for their interp. Sexualizing your image to sell records. And especially, "The last verse is about the need to feel loved, and what people will do in order to get that, even if it's the wrong kind of attention. She finds it immature "like little kids", and thinks its an ass-backward way to produce music "pathetic, impossible"." (ebdavidson)

The Soft Skeleton project is not sexualized, it's such a serious and important poetry. It's still got its own sex appeal, but it's the type that connects sexuality with the rest of things, doesnt overemphasize it. It's paradoxical because she writes about such important ideas but few will hear them because risque, sexualized music is what gets big promotion. It taps people's instincts and bypasses their other mind.
