I had a very different idea about the meaning to this song than the other comments. To me this was him singing to a child he is fostering/adopting, possibly from an abusive home. He is saying, "I know that you have grown to know a life where your caregiver hurts you, gets drunk (and pisses on their bed), is ungrateful, and does not love you, but do you mind if i do not do those things?" I think it is a very beautiful way of welcoming a child into your life, and asking their permission to help them. He asks if the child approves of him and what he wears and does. I take the line "Are you angry the you I'm adopting, Is only a pretense at home" literally. The definition of pretense is "an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true." He is saying " Are you angry that I try to pretend this is your home, even though you do not feel that is true" The last paragraph is a little harder for me to figure out, but I think that is becasue it is about a specific person. The last couple lines, however, are clear. "Do you mind for I think I still love you Do you mind Always have Evermore" |

“No, did your sheep start jumping? They grow out their teeth Did they need a little something more than this?” I relate to this song a lot in anxious times. When I am struggling with worrying thoughts, I dread going to sleep. Instead of counting sheep and drifting off too sleep, many nights are spent awake in a panic about everything I worry about. It’s so much easier to stay awake late and busy your mind with other things. “'Cause now they're biting at your feet, They got you running from this place, Now they're breathing down your neck, Your eyes look lonely in your face” It seems the person he is addressing is getting worse, and people around them are starting to notice. They are so tormented by their demons they carry that they avoid responsibility and exclude themselves. “Every time you think, well, they'll be biting at your thoughts, And every time you blink, well, you'll be so damn far, But you are more than this.” I think that this is jacks way of telling them that even if they don’t get better? This does not define them. |
