Oh, Oh, OH - this takes me back.... I listened to it during a particularly nasty break up. Especially 'As the sun would set you would rise,' since he was a lazy bum who stayed in bed all day. How lovely to see and hear it now and just feel glad to be out of that situation. |

I always thought the clouds in her coffee were her tears landing in it as she thought about the dreams she had had. Cracking song though! And I always thought it was about Warren Beatty. Whoever he is lol. (JOKE ok, please don't everyone start leaving angry posts telling me who he is.) |

The lyrics above are wrong. He says let me give my life TO you, not FOR you. There is a huge difference. He isn't talking about laying down and dying for her (although he probably would have.) The ultimate gift he can give to her is himself, and she can do with him what she wants. He believes he is a better person with her. This guy was a nature lover. The only way he could express his love for his wife Annie was to liken it to the beautiful things in nature.
Possibly one of the most romantic songs ever written. This is the lullaby I sing to my baby son. This and Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel. |

I agree with Guerillabaabaa's point about the impossible tasks he sets as a test. I don't know about the devil part though. I always loved this song, but as I got older, it made me smile thinking of all of the tasks men can be asked to perform to win the heart of their true love. Now the tables have turned and it's the woman who has to do all of the running around looking for a leather sickle to reap the acre of land that, lets face it, she's never going to find since it has to be an acre, and also has to fit in a bunch of heather!! All that whilst making this guy a shirt without any seams or needlework. I wonder if she thought about using wondaweb! |

Blimey, this one stirred up a few thoughts didn't it! In the film 'The Graduate,' the song doesn't appear in its entirety. They actually sing 'stand up tall Mrs Robinson, god in heaven smiles on those who pray.' I think that is a beautiful piece of verse.
The Graduate is definitely in my all time top ten. |

A masterpiece. I was brought up on Simon and Garfunkel. I'm 26, so was born at the end of the seventies, and my parents played Simon and Garfunkel constantly. I love all of their work, but this is a particular favourite of mine. I love the second 'It Was.' |
