The Guess Who – Undun Lyrics 7 years ago
@[hillflyer:27222] almost - SUN in drug culture was code for Heroin. She died from an overdose. "house of the rising sun" is a heroin den, in its most common parlance. Eric Clapton suffered Heroin addiction, kind of a thing, so he'd know. Plus, a friend was a prosecutor, he clued me in to the translation for this and other drug words, I'm a geek and have no personal experience.

The Guess Who – Undun Lyrics 7 years ago
Translation into 1960's / 1970's drug culture:

Sun: What you see when you do heroin. "House of the Rising Sun" was a heroin den.
Undun: dead or dying due to an overdose of heroin.

Song Meaning:
* "didn't know what she was headed for" ==> heroin is frequently cut with other substances to make it more or less potent. This means taking a dose is risky since you don't know how much the correct dose is. She was taking too much but this was unintentional.
* "found what she was headed for but it was too late" ==> . Heroin is injected all at once, so determining dosage has to be done ahead of time, once it's in, there's no getting it out.
* "she's lost the sun" . ==> she's dead from an overdose, she can't have anymore sun (heroin) because she's deceased.

Pretty simple.

The song has a lament feel to it, as well, that this death was preventable in a sense, that it was an accident and a tragedy. It also has a storytelling vibe, because he's describing what happened to this person as an explanation.

Ending with 'no, no, no...' ==> frequent to deny as part of grief, it's one of the "5 stages of grief" (google that if you're wondering, it's long-established medical info on how people mourn).
