| Death Cab for Cutie – A Lack of Color Lyrics | 7 years ago |

It is known already that the first two stanzas of the song are referring to "fun facts" about how us humans see. That we really see everything upside down, our brain just flips it for us. Also that the color black is known as a lack of color (as in the song title), but is really this way because it has absorbed every color so has none to reflect back to us (the whole second stanza describes this). I think this song is really about how the character in the song didn't open himself up enough for his lover, and the relationship suffered for it. That she saw him as a "lack of color", when he knew on the inside that he was "bursting at the seams". It's talking about how when we see something, we're seeing it through a lense that doesn't show the full truth. He wishes that he let that person see that side of him before they left ("I should've given you a reason to stay") In relationships, we come for what we see. We stay for the color we unveil, metaphorically speaking. And if you stay too closed off, things fizzle out. This character is regretting not learning this sooner. |
