It’s the same guy throughout the entire song. The gifted, beautiful man who gets away with all the things the rest of us cannot. He doesn't treat women very well. He’s gravity’s angel. Until he ages. Inevitably, gravity’s angel is drawn down to earth, leaving gravity’s (cautionary) rainbow in his wake. He dies “an ugly guy with an ugly face,” an “also ran” who was overly-reliant of his evanescent charms. No, you don’t have to read Thomas Pynchon to understand this. |
