This song is about a person who chronically makes rash judgments based on fears and possible downsides before he really ruminates on those actions and the outcome of them. He takes things for granted and it takes him a while to truly understand what he let go of. That in itself is tragic as he doesn’t give himself a chance and ends up filled with regret. “Cos’ love comes slow and it goes so fast” Being in a relationship with her felt slow and long because they are always looking away, waiting for something that will meet their standards -in that they will never have any nagging negativity that will cause them to run away. When she leaves it’s fleeting and permanent because just like that he can’t be around her anymore. “You see her when you fall asleep, never to touch and never to keep” coz you loved her too much and you dived too deep” Here, the person realises that the reason they didn’t appreciate their relationship and let their fears turn away from it is because the relationship had the potential to truly be something great and meant something. the irony here is that now that they’ve taken the time to think about it and made this realisation, the woman is now untouchable and can no longer be his. Maybe if they had paced themselves to the point where they would have room to process how they feel and not be overwhelmed by the significance of the relationship (rather than ‘dive deep’), they wouldn’t have jumped out the moment they felt it to be too deep for them. “Only know you love her when you let her go” He ruined something great before it even had a chance to be because that scared him and didn’t seem worth it. “Maybe one day you’ll understand why everything you touch surely dies” This person will spend a lot of his life looking back to his past quietly wistful because he didn’t care to look around enough when it was his present. I like to think the song is a little repetitive with the chorus because the habits of this person are causing the same patterns of taking things for granted to replay in their life. Once the things he truly needs have passed they become the ‘dreams he truly wishes will last’ and longs for in the future -ultimately making him take for granted the things that he will have instead again. |

| Just to add it seems as though the excuses he made and the inability to forge new meaningful romantic relationships extend beyond one new potential love. It seems like people come and go and he lets them (and will continue to much to his frustration) and that the previous relationship(?) that broke him didn’t just make it hard for him to grow close and vulnerable with one person but makes it hard for him in many other scenarios. This makes sense as with each person that passes he grows increasingly frustrated with himself for holding back. Also can we appreciate how great the music video is at aiding with the meaning of the song. The way it feels like the woman can’t get through to him on an emotional level meanwhile he won’t engage with her because he’s stilled by his singing to us about how broken he is :( | |

Aah no ones commented on this song ok well I’ll start I love this song it’s so.. calm and I’m not sure how to explain it but it’s very vague I guess. Kinda harder to crack than others. I’m guessing it’s about him reflecting on where they left off something he had with someone and something quick/short but seemingly explosive happened that put a kind of abrupt pause to the relationship or maybe broke them up(she probably said something judging by the line ‘from the tongue it slips some simple twist of fate’) but he’s definitely bitter and she left him or broke it off like she said something in the moment and he’s kind of just stewing about it in a way reflecting back on their ‘ignorance’ as when they where blinded by what they had and didn’t look beyond that. he just wants to remain in that one moment where he can savour the bliss of what they had before they ‘awoke’. He’s still caught up in everything and disguised how he misses her. He still feels this sense of bitterness at how she left him and he’s deeply consumed in it all it’s all very confusing lol I’m trying to figure this song out but I think I’m so far out. As far as the music video goes that’s a whole other story |

I kind of agree with what readyfreddie has said but I don’t think that mama is alluding to Mary I think it’s a way of reaching out for comfort and help. Mama is like a symbol for a comforting figure the one you cry to and trust with your honesty. Especially since he says mama and not mother as it is more childlike (this isn’t the right word to describe it sorry I tried) and it makes him sound more vulnerable which is what I feel like he was going with as it heightens the contrast of the otherlouder part of the song to come as well as the end. When he reflects over everything that he has previously revelled in out in the song he’s crying out in helplessness and the pain in coming to terms with everything (whatever you take that to be). In both times this is the part of the song that is more raw and shows his aching for someone to comfort him and make him feel better in the middle of it all and when you feel the regret and his true suppressed feelings be released. This whole song is so amazing in that it juxtaposes a lot of different emotions that are expressed which show that sense of confliction and sadness and mixed with the slight vagueness I guess that’s how a lot of people can identify with it and mould it to their own situations in order to relate- everyone can feel this sense of denial/helplessness/frustration/dejection all at once. I guess I just love how this song jumps about from one tone to the other like he’s going through different stages of his grief in just six minutes (not long enough!) although this is kind of irrelevant my favourite part was when he says ‘I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all’ I don’t know why I just feel it the most I love everyone’s theories it gives the song so much perspective ok ive rambled too much now |

Well I kinda agree with all these but I feel like this song isn't really about taking things slow. I feel like the guy who is singing is projecting all his pain about how his heart is breaking. He clearly loves this girl and is emotionally invested in the relationship but he knows that she does not feel the same way. Although it's obviously not specific she's either just playing with him and they both know it or maybe he told her how he feels and she rejected it or wants to take it slow or she just doesn't care and now he sees that she doesn't really want the same kind of relationship as he does. I feel like he's kind of conflicted because he knows it's not good for him but he wants to be with her at the same time. 'Your using me do it slowly make it last until I have to go' he's almost letting her as he knows that this will be the last chance of remotely being with her as after he says 'stay away from me' meaning that as hard as it is for him he can't stand the pain of the heartbreak and needs to stop seeing her. You can also hear the build up during the song. At the start it's slow and low almost like he's telling her this but half heartedly because he still wants to be close to her and is giving in but during the song it becomes stronger and then he says it louder because his emotions are coming out and he keeps repeating it because it can only go on for so long. He's more sure of his need for her to stay away at the end and in the last line he's just defeated and tired of everything is just done with it. |
