Modest Mouse – Grey Ice Water Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is about a man who has ended a romantic relationship with a woman he cared about very much, to take a job up in Alaska. He tries to focus on his work at the cannery but when he's not working there, it's impossible to do anything but think.
"It's easy to save what the cannery pays 'cause there ain't nowhere to spend it"

Now, I believe that the closing lines of this song, instead of being, "On the Arctic blast," are instead, "On the Arctic glass"

This sounds a lot more like what Isaac is saying on the track, and would make sense in a few different ways. I imagine "Arctic glass" would be ice that is see-through, over a frozen lake. Obviously, if the ice you are standing on is so thin that it's like glass, you're probably going to fall through, and if the water is that freezing cold, you might die (either by drowning or freezing to death). So, I believe that the closing lines are the narrator attempting to kill himself by drowning in this frozen lake. Either that, or it's a metaphor for the relationship he had with this girl in the first place: he cared about her and wanted to stay in a relationship, but the entire time it felt like the relationship was on the verge of collapse; like he had to be as careful as he could as to not be broken up with, so he took the easy way to avoid the whole fiasco, and used the excuse of a job far away.

That's my interpretation anyway lmao
