Here is a possible interpretation, although there could be so much more behind it... "Damages define our border Wall and manner forged in flame" Our negative experiences close us off. Our character is formed by these negative experience. "Knowing little of your wounding Share our mending all the same" Although we do not know the specifics of others negative experiences, we all heal the same way. "Weight of words and wars we carry I'm like you, just like you" We hang on and dwell on these experiences - we all do it, we are all human. "Eyes of secret, storm and story Show and tell, we'll make it through" We have burdens that we keep to ourselves. When we share our experiences, struggle - we realize we're not alone, others have had almost the exact same thoughts and experiences. And by understanding that others go through the same thing and have made it out, we can too. "Sadness like a pendulum Pulls us round and to and fro" When I typically think of the symbolism behind pendulum, I think of extremes, like sadness contrasted with extreme happiness. I don't think this is the case here. I think pendulum represents the constant, unrelenting sadness that takes time and moments away from your life, while simultaneously controlling you. "Onus Fate and Undue Odium Armor, anchor, lead and stone" Hm not sure what to make of this. I think he is saying take responsibility for your destiny. Your loathing, hatred and proverbial "stone" you're hanging on to is contributing to your fate; it's unnecessary and harmful to your well-being. "By the telling will they become, Will they all be feathers?" By expressing yourself / communicating with others, will we be able to let go of these experiences that burden us? I also think another meaning in this song is that you can change your perception of anger and intolerance. Yet we hang on to it. We LET ourselves become shaped by the negative and its not important, especially given the weight it has over our lives when we hang on to it. He says "I'm like you, just like you". A lot of our anger, sadness and intolerance is due to the judgement we pass. But we are really all the same. Such a beautiful song.. |
