| Eagles – The Last Resort Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| @[Cleverwitch:26615] I think your interpretation is spot-on, including all the parallel references. Henley has always nailed it when telling stories about the southland (you can feel the pulse of freeway and the smack of the Santa Ana winds in Boys of Summer; Disney’s Haunted Mansion’s ballroom and Fatty Arbuckle’s twisted parties at the Mission Inn sneaking playfully into Hotel California) and this is, as you say, truly a masterpiece. I felt the power of this song when i first heard it at 16, and having traveled to or lived in all these places, knew their truth the minute I arrived. There’s one place he doesn’t mention, and we can all guess why. But like Lahaina, its spirit somehow survives in the cracks and crevices, for those willing to look behind the painted boxes or to chat with the ukulele craftsman in the tiny shack. As The Last Resort (which owes a bit of its legacy to One Tin Soldier) climaxes, and takes on that gospel refrain quality, I don’t mind its musical repetitiveness as much as other Eagles songs that lack a true bridge. His prayer bears repeating. Which is why I hear it every time someone starts talking about colonizing Mars. We have got to make it here. | |
