In my twenties, I lived through a terrorist attack. I had PTSD that made it difficult to concentrate and succeed in school. For a while, I felt very insecure about whether or not I had a "brain" as she sings in the song. When I found this song I listened to it on repeat endlessly. The verse hit me hard, all the questioning about why there is such violence in the world, why so many people struggle and are lonely. The chorus gives me the strongest emotions- that perhaps it's because she doesn't have a brain she is not as "cold as a stone and rich as the fool/That turned all those good hearts away." Instead, she has empathy- something you can only have when you don't believe you have all the answers. |
