Black Flag – I'm the One Lyrics 7 years ago
I can't believe there are no comments on this, my favorite Black Flag song. Despite the aggressive sound of the song, I actually take away a strangely empowering message from it. To me, it's about realizing that waiting for a lover to come along and "complete" you is not always the right way to go. Not everybody has a soulmate, and I think ultimately this song is about somebody coming to that harsh realization and then being confronted with the fact that the only way forward is to love himself. It's about being disappointed with other people and relationships to such a degree that you understand that those things are never going to truly bring you fulfilment, or even if they do sometime in the future there's no use putting your life on hold in the meantime or relentlessly seeking them out. Or, even further, it's about realizing that being disappointed "with" other people in general just comes down to your own unrealistic expectations that you project onto others. In the end, a lot of us truly are alone and are our own best friend (or worst enemy) and learning to love yourself can be really hard, but it's worth it.
