Kwame; esatto! The lyric is a wise
prescription for happy living, as if a kind elder were speaking to a difficult child for whom nothing turns to be exactly what he or she expects it to be, hence "come down off your pomps and pride", which are the child's expectations of immediate satisfaction and recognition or acknowledgement, and enjoy the loveliness that is spread before you. "Ease it and happily, nicely come down" (some have said 'calm down', but I read it as come down off of) is trying to get the child (or whomever) to see the beauty and joy that's right in front of them. I am glad to have read your natural and clear reading of this. It's what I felt inside. So many malcontents ("when they see it, they say it's not light, can this be right?") are disappointed at the wonders and beauty of what is before them by false expectations. Perhaps we all have to beware of that in ourselves to degree or other, so it's for everyone, as pride gets in the way of doing and seeing so much beauty and accomplishing a great deal.Thanks. |

A Muswell Hillbilly and now a Muswell Astronaut, Ray, in so many songs reflects on the needs for personal space and time to be one on one with who one is, and this is one of those great pieces. Nohody's Fool and so many others share thia theme in different contexts. Pronounced "Sane". We all need that time...and someone who is there for us and we for them on our return: Inner Space and In A Space. |

Well, I think it's taken me far too long to figure this one out, and I see that even all my years (obviously to stay young you've got to remain.....shall we say....naive) didn't help me. Just uncapitalize "Can" and change "and Kitty can" to "but Kitty can..." .
abut perhaps I'm still wrong....I see that as a Kinks fan the Bee Gees "really got me"! That was when I got an idea..... |

Wow! Can someone help with this apparently whimsically trance-inducing song. Is his cat helping him make up his mind on who the right one is? I've loved this since I was a teenager. Never figured it out. The cat or the girl is it? Still love this and the album "Idea" I wished they had continued along these lines rather than the later disco debacle (apologies and bless you if you love that stuff- ¡sobre gustos no hay disputa!). The themes return again and again with Ray and Dave, and they always seem fresh, with a new twist and even a tip of the hat to others whose voices have been added to those critical of the dehumanizing and depersonalizing trend of 21st Century society. |

This is one of the greatest songs ever. The lyrics....should be and no doubt have been, incorporated into a marriage ceremony! (My parents would've been a bit surprised, but secretly delighted. The key is the commitment : forever!) ^_^ Moby Grape forever! Jerry Miller and the crew never cease to delight, amaze and inspire me! Saw him live 3000 miles from where I bought the album 50 years or so ago...and worth the wait, and with my wife of almost 40 years. Never thought I'd live this song! This music stands the test of time. Bella, incantevole, musica. |
