@[dirty11827:26325] You are correct a “sound” can be a narrow stretch of water. Reading the line as worded it seems to elude to a river meeting a sound or sea.

Sounding can also be the act of “measuring”.

"Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Out where the rivers meet the sounding sea"

To accompany is to go along with someone on equal terms.

When you put the two lines together, it could be interpreted that the “sounding sea” is referring to the action of measuring the depth of his love.

She will accompany him equally, where her love (the rivers) meet the depths of his (the sounding sea).

Or maybe not…
