The joker and the thief are a team. The joker is male, the thief is female. The thief stands in the field of clover. Joker is night, thief is day. |

| Or, you know... next time take the time to actually look at all the reasons why it didn't work out the first time. And mourn. | |

Repeating mistakes in relationships. "Just, is it time to take a look at what happened? Oh, bound by your shame When you made the mistake of reacting to reaction" Instead of taking a look at why it didn't work out the first time, you rush to trust giving it a second chance. You believe things will work out better this time. "You put your thoughts into the shape of a weapon And all you did was learn a terrible lesson That you can sell me out again Sell me out again" "Live and learn" concept. All you did was learn. You haven't experienced the consequences of a repeated mistake, of giving it a second chance. Your thoughts become the weapon because you'll get hurt again in the end. It didn't work out the first time for a reason. "There is a thought that drifts away It's an echo A memory replaced by distractions It's a distraction" There's a thought, a fear that it won't work out the second time. An echo, meaning a repeat. That thought drifts away. And it drifts away because you never took the time to look at all the reasons it didn't work out the first time. You're being distracted by your thoughts, whatever is allowing you to believe things will work out this time. "Your suicidal regrets and all (My love, it has died) I guess that you should know (The dream is still alive)" You no longer regret why it didn't work out the first time. The death of regret keeps your dream alive. The dream that you'll end up together as you wanted to be. "You can sell me out again Sell me out again" And it'll sell you out again. You should've buried the dream, learned from your first mistake. |

| James Blake – Retrograde Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| It's about going back to the person you once were. Past tense used in [loved], meaning love yourself as you had before. "Show me why you're strong" is the same as "loved." Show how your old self was strong by showing why you're strong now. I don't know if it's hit or hip, but it doesn't matter to me. They're basically aware that their friends are gone, that's the darkness. They won't come. So where do you fit in this new world now that your friends are gone. Now that you're alone because you've basically outgrown them. That's where they end it - show me where you fit. Who will you choose as your friends, to be by your side. They are the dawn, their light keeping you out of the darkness. | |
| Pearl Jam – Just Breathe Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| Songs are meant to reach a broad audience, which is why lyrics are written as they are. It's one thing to know the story behind the song, and another to solidify it to that specific story. It doesn't have to be. This particular song is about death. Religion doesn't necessarily need to play a part, but it can if that's how you find yourself connecting to it. I'm not religious myself, but I believe the soul of a man is just as important as his body. Since this song is about death, it centers around the man's soul. The first stanza points that out. Everything that lives eventually dies. In the second stanza, the writer speaks of the people he loves. Acquaintances are one thing. He's speaking of those closest to him, and he wants them to stay with him, let's just breathe - breathe while we're still alive. Breathe until we die. Then he gets into his sins, something we consider as we know every life must end. What sins we committed in our lives. Eventually we have to face them as we face death. He wants to stop sinning, stop hurting. Those people that he loves, they show him there's more to the world than the pain he feels as well as the pain he causes. They help him to believe, so he wants them to stay with him, to help him cleanse his soul. He needs them and he wants them because they're the ones that matter to his soul. They're also the people he feels the need to come clean to. And it's only their judgment that matters. The rest of the world could go on believing of him as they wish, he doesn't care. He's only coming clean to those closest to him. He wants them to know him while they're still alive. Know him before they die. He tells them what he sees when he looks at their faces. Love. It doesn't take, it gives. Then he finishes by asking them to hold him until he dies, and when they die, he'll meet them on the other side. The writer comes off like he's expecting to be the first to die. It feels like a familial song, whether that family is by blood or the family we've chosen for ourselves. | |
| Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| To me, this song is about facing a painful truth, whatever that truth may be. Being blind to something that was always there, but we didn't see it because we refused to. We didn't want to hear about it. We didn't want to talk about it. We simply wanted to ignore it, remain ignorant. Because we found happiness or comfort in the falsehood. Some people don't dare to speak the truth out of care for their friends, so they remain silent. Some people speak the truth, but only those who truly want to face it will listen. So often times that truth remains unseen and unknown. Despite that, the truth still planted its seeds, left its signs. Whether it be those warnings from friends, or things we've seen but shrugged off as if they were nothing. Eventually, those seeds bloom. And when they do, that truth is ever-painful. So painful, we try to escape it, try to return to the darkness of unknowing. But we can't unlearn the truth. So we remain pained by it, by our unwillingness to face it and accept it as it was. The dream is often far better than the reality. | |
