I like thinking that the "fan club" is a reference to particularly following one of these cults, worshiping the leader over other religious figures. I find the "shake that woody, St. Pinocchio" to be one of the most interesting lines in the whole song. Woody could be a reference to the cross in christianity. While Pinocchio could mean two things, either the lies that are told in the cults/religion in general, or you could think of it as someone being controlling, since Pinocchio was a puppet (who was made of wood, perhaps thats why the word woody is used.). I guess it could mean that someone is pulling all the strings, manipulating the people who let themselves be tied to the puppeteer. Pretty deep. "The greedy monks playing last Sunday at the milky way" could be a reference to the religious meetings christians have each Sunday. I am not sure about the milky way part, but I can imagine greedy monks being the religious leaders speaking, since they are greedy for money and religious. Lampshade crown of thorns is also very interesting in my opinion. Jesus wore a so called crown of thorns, and the lampshade could be a cheap replacement for it. In the same way that religious cults are imposters of the actual religions. The part of the song that Im wondering about though is when Andy sings "Im in love from a far, say a prayer for a fallen star". I can not really find any deeper meaning here. I really think the lyrics of joining a fan club is underrated. It gives me chills every time I hear it. Also, I know that this is a very late response, but I hope that you read this :)! |
