I think the woman in the first stanza represents the creative muse. The video and documentary, what the band has done with bluegrass, illustrates the contrast between playing it safe and doing what is expected, versus stepping out and exploring uncharted territory, taking the chance of making mistakes, with the reward of expanding the world for yourselves and others.

One thing to point out is they do get on the train. The longing to travel into the unknown is behind them. And while the journey didn't meet expectations, it still had moments of satisfaction and fulfilment that made it worthwhile. And since it's engrained in our DNA to listen for trains to jump on, it's good to accept the fact that reality doesn't match fantasy...but take the trip anyway, and enjoy the ride. |

| My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade Lyrics

His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps and be a war hero, his father later died, and the son is torn because he wants to honor his father's memory but doesn't want to join the "black parade" filled with misery and hate, and feels he is only a boy and can honor his father's memory, but not by becoming a war hero. The "she" may be his mother, the weary widow, who is one of the reasons not to go to war (maybe because he doesn't want her to have to lose her son as well as her husband.) The war veterans look down on him, but he doesn't care. The message to his father are somewhat defiant and scornful, like he resents his father, and the world, expecting him to do something that he considers to be wrong. |
