| KoЯn – What It Is (Jonathan Davis Solo) Lyrics | 7 years ago |

Obviously this song is about accepting who you are, becoming comfortable with your personality and all its sides. But in my opinion, Jonathan also deals with the human nature he does not see as something good: "Pretty soon you'll have to face/ you're a Virus called the human race". In many cases your nature is what makes you do things your Moral Standards would actually forbid. The writer uses the Picture of a house in order to explain his sight on the Problem: The "Basement devil" represents the human nature on which his personality is build: it is "kicking the ass" of the "angel on the ceiling" who I think is the morality the inhabitant of the house between (the conscious personality) wants to follow, but often can't. This strongly reminds me of Sigmund Freud's theory of ego, superego and id: In this case the ego would be the house's inhabitant caught between his superego and the id below who often wins against the superego. Anyway, the song has a strong message - I really appreciate it. |
