Steely Dan – Green Earrings Lyrics 7 years ago
@[aic22:25983] Not a jewel thief - a junkie who steals the earrings and then shows no remorse (just like addicts do). How do I know? This line: Sorry, angel
I get hungry like a child. Who else gets hungry like a child than a junkie needing a fix?

It's not a jewel thief as jewel thieves don't have conversations with their marks. This is a theft by someone the victim knows, and knows well.
DF gives us a clue that's usually overlooked. The line is: "Sorry, angel
I get hungry like a child" Who gets hungry like a child? A junkie! This song is about a junkie stealing his girlfriend's earrings for a hit and has no remorse when she confronts him about it. Drugs are the subject of about 50% of all first generation SD songs, so it certainly fits that pattern.

Steely Dan – Turn That Heartbeat Over Again Lyrics 7 years ago
Here's a few random facts to go along with your theories. I have no idea if they're what DF had in mind when he wrote this song.

FOOD was a an avante garde restaurant in SoHo that opened in 1971. It may or not be what DF is referencing, but he loves to include mentions of obscure places in NYC.

A package store is another name for a liquor store.

Sam was the friendly bartender on the long-running TV show Bonanza, which was still on the air when this song was written.

The only William Wright I could find that might be swearing and drinking all night was a 17th century pirate. Again, DF loves the obscure.

No idea whether DF is referencing Paraguay the country, or the city of Paraguay, Cuba, which is adjacent to US Naval Base on Guantanamo Bay. You know how DF likes to write about Cuba (see The Goodbye Look).

Feel feel to interpret, accept or reject as you like.
