I think this song is about pain and hopelessness after loss. "I have burned my tomorrows" - I have destroyed myself through abuse. I think of smoking as that is how I destroyed my health post break-up depression and there is no going back now "I stand inside today" - I think this means, as a few people said, being faced with where you are, and that the "future" does no wait for anyone. Today will end, and there is no tomorrow "Burn my shadow" -I read this as delete my memory, burn the shadow of me after I am gone, because only my shadow remains now, my tomorrows are gone "Oh, how I loved you" - The strong feelings of love and hurt that got the person to make all decisions that ultimately left him as only a projected "shadow" of himself, by the temporary light of love |

| I think it all revolves around rivers running to the sea, and the deeper meaning might be about uncontrollable lust and loss. The demons and people judging the lustful relationship, she could hear them rushing to the car and they have eventually kill the "light". The futility of the relationship/feelings is clear to them "Like breaking diamonds with your hand". The lust/feelings is the river "And the river flows beneath your skin. Like savage horses kept within". She, like a river running to the sea, has no choice and is swept away by uncontrollable lust or love. Eventually the river that flows beneath the other person's skin becomes her as in the end she realizes she is the river running to the sea "And the river grows inside of me". | |
