@[me10133120:25816] "Measure" is also a musical term. For music in 4/4 time, it's a 4-beat section of the song. He could be asking her out to go see a band or concert?

My interpretation of the song might me a more literal one, based on the lyrics.

To me, the song is a story about a young girl living in NY City, who doesn't have much money, so she spends her days daydreaming of things. (Dreaming is free)

I'm not sure if the young man she meets in the restaurant is one of her daydreams that she conjures up, or if this event is actually happening?

The part where Debbie Harry sings "meet me at the turnstile, I never met him, I'll never forget him..." - could this be that she got stood up for their date? Or if she was simply daydreaming about him, this could also explain that part of the song - that he was just an image in her mind of a guy she'd like to be with?

I'm wondering if there's something odd about her appearance? Given the time when this song was released (1978), the punk rock scene was in its' heyday in NYC. Blondie was also considered part of the NYC punk scene, and this song has a very distinct punk rock feel. The line in the song "people stop and stare at me, we just walk on by" - could she be a punk rocker chick? Is this why the young man doesn't show up at the turnstile (subway) to meet her, he had a change of heart?

The final lines about sitting by and watching the river flow and watching the traffic go, along with "something of your very own, something you can have and hold" really makes me think that she has no money and not much else to do, so she just wanders around daydreaming of things she'd like to have in her life.

I'm not sure if this is remotely what the intent was in the song, for now it's just another possible explanation of the lyrics. If so, this is actually kind of a sad song.

@[Heinrich:25814] A "measure" is also a musical term. In 4/4 time, a measure is a 4-beat part of the song.
So it's possible that the guy in the song is asking her to go see a band, concert, etc.
