| Something tells me this girl was not a girlfriend, a spouse, or someone that he had actually been in a long-term committed relationship with. I think the lines "I didn't realize of our love", says that this woman was someone who he had kind of tested the waters with or had just kind of had a short-lived love affair with. I think this is why he didn't realize it was love because he figured this fling would dissipate and that he would not have been harshly affected by it when it was over. The fact that he is calling on a "Dream Merchant" and asking him to "Make my dreams come true" to me says that although he didn't take their love affair seriously or even realize that he really loved the woman, he did recognize that the woman was a great catch or the woman of his dreams. He took her for granted. But after they parted and some time passed and maybe he had dated a few other women, he came to the realization that the woman was a rare gem that couldn't be replicated when he couldn't find a woman to make him feel the way she did. That's when he realized he did love her. But now it's too late because maybe she has moved on or he just isn't sure of her relationship status to reach out to her so he is calling on this Dream Merchant or really just really hoping and wishing that mystical force will make her come back to him so he can actually reciprocate the love she gave him that has him in such a bunch. | |

I think this song is about two people who had a secret love affair that was very short lived hence the lines "Our small moment that we shared is only yours and mine. No one else is really going to know that I care about you". I think they may have had no choice but to keep the intense feelings they shared between the two of them because their relationship was the forbidden kind. Perhaps it was societally frowned upon or was a relationship that could have gotten the two of them in a lot of trouble which is why it was short lived. I think he could not express his feelings to her for this reason and may have left things unsaid. But I think despite what he couldn't express, he really cared for her. And maybe some time has passed now and he has realized that he would take the opportunity to love her and express his feelings if he was ever presented with another chance to do so. |
