Simon and Garfunkel – Scarborough Fair/Canticle Lyrics 1 year ago
Young lovers are separated when the boy is called off to war, & she promises to wait for him. When he returns, he realizes he is a man who's been changed by his experiences in war, and that he may only bring sadness to her if they resume their relationship.

He wants her to know he still loves her, but there are insurmountable obstacles that prevent him from ever giving his love directly to her again; and she must not sacrifice her happiness to try to save him.

My God... Never noticed this. Believe this is Roger. Starts at the two minute mark in the video I saw; repeated 3 times. Wonder if Syd noticed this. He must have followed their work, & this was the first studio vocal by Gilmour.

Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade of Pale Lyrics 7 years ago
Keith Reid has stated the song is about a drunken fling as recalled by the male. Love the cryptic lyrics. This is how I interpret them:

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels cross the floor (boy meets girl & they unexpectedly click)
I was feeling kinda seasick (lovesick; is she too young? Will we regret this?)
But the crowd called out for more (party going into extra innings)
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away (realization of their destiny)
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray (chemistry even more intense than expected)

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale (in the dim light of the final experience, color vanishes “red is gray and yellow white”, as in Moody Blues/Knights in White Satin)

She said, there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see (I don’t do flings)
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be (then why has destiny brought us together?)
One of sixteen vestal virgins (16 the age of consent in England)
Who were leaving for the coast (not an experienced good time gal, a possible tease & run?)
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well’ve been closed (I normally wouldn’t act this way with someone like her)

She said, I’m home on shore leave, (I’m not here for a fling)
Though in truth we were at sea (the sea of love)
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree (the chemistry had already past the point of no return)
Saying, you must be the mermaid,
that took neptune for a ride. (friendly jibe on her flirting/teasing and then thinking of running away)
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died (realization of how delicate her feelings were)

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is its queen (fate laughs at those who think they are in control of their emotions)
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean (a fling is not dirty if love, however brief exists)
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed (res ipsa loquitur)
