@[joe1142486:35695] EXACTLY! The tune is sung in the ironic tone. The key is the one line:

If it were easy as fishin' you could be a musician

Every professional musician I know works hard as hell but everybody thinks it's easy and just fun lying in the sun.

Supertramp – Take The Long Way Home Lyrics 5 years ago
I know this goes somewhat against many of the ideas on this forum and perhaps it's somewhat a sign of the times, but to me this song is about the sense of loss and hopelessness that one feels when they conclude that their life has been a sad failure, a joke, and they decide it's time to end it with suicide.

Every stanza increases the intensity of self perception as failure... not a Romeo, the joke of the neighborhood, ignored by your spouse and never being yourself. Even that moment of being up on stage and having a moment in the spotlight reminds you just how fleeting and rare it is and as you enjoy it there's no one to share it with you, those closest to you think you are insane.

So your life is a catastrophe and thinking back on all the different turns you could've taken on the path of life you realize, at last, that you've run out of time... so what's the point of playing it? Time to go...

So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home

Yeah, the long way home, the way home that means you're never going to arrive again, you're out of there forever.

You took the long way home, so long.

Well, I love the song and I can identify with the song and I generally agree with most of the interpretations listed but I do have to say, in my own silly way, that one thing that makes it special for me is that my good old 13-year-old dog who is named Shadow always highlights the beginning of the chorus because through thick and thin, good and bad, high and low, he always does walk beside me no matter what. Every time I get to that spot I sing it loud and he comes running.

Christopher Cross – Think Of Laura Lyrics 5 years ago
Cross wrote the song to mourn the death of Denison University college student Laura Carter, who was killed in Columbus, Ohio when she was struck by a stray bullet during gunfire in a gang war. Cross had come to meet Carter through her college roommate Paige McNinch, whom Cross was dating at the time. McNinch was pictured on the inner sleeve of the "Another Page" album, sitting on a stool. Cross wrote the song as a way of offering comfort to McNinch, and honoring Carter's memory.

I really like this song, love the intensity of the lyrics and the way it develops. It has both elements of melancholy but also stoic commitment.

And, I have to admit, one of the reasons I really love it is because while I can identify with it sitting next to me on the floor is my best friend, my standard poodle named Shadow.

So when I am in my truck and singing loud and rocking out and I belt out:

"My shadow's the only one that walks beside me"

He always jumps up into the front seat to lick my face and get a head rub and we both feel better.
