I don’t think this song is about cheating. I feel this song is about life with a girlfriend who suffers from anxiety and is controlling. The chorus starts with the artist & his dog, Louie, running to his happy place, a music party in LBC. Here he is free to dance, express himself and be free. The last line of this section ends with “it get’s harder” which sets up the first verse which juxtaposes the chorus. Verse 1: He loves his girl but she has anxiety/fear which makes her need to control everything they do. Outwardly, she wears a mask and gives her ‘love’ to everyone else. When she returns she goes on lockdown and that includes him. This causes them to fight and is why he gets none of the love that she shows everyone else. It’s why he says “We got this relationship”, it’s how they relate to each other. Verse 2: “Take this veil off my eyes” - He is being blinded by his girlfriend who does not let him experience life the way he wants. “My burning sun will someday rise” - The burning sun is him glowing with emotion, free to express himself in a very extroverted and carefree way. He’s telling himself as a coping method, fear-not that day will come. However, right now he’s going to have to “play it himself” because he’s not getting along with his GF who has him stuck on a “shelf”. Verse 3: He is venting his frustration at her. He needs her to understand how he needs to live their life together. He feels it’s evil to hold a man down like she is doing. After all, he’s “Doin’ Time”. The title is an analogy between his self-chosen relationship and prison time. Bridge: He says take a tip from me.. He’s trying to help others who are in a situation like him. “And we can do it like this, in the place to be”. He’s telling others the place to be is in the dance party not stuck on a shelf suffering under his GF’s lockdown. You must your emotions be free and not allow your GF’s fear about what others think keep you on a “shelf” |
