I too was under the impression that this song had a person as the subject matter until, I heard it for probably the 300th time in my 4Runner on my way to work, having just taken my methadone I came to the realization that is exactly what this song is about. The "censorship" of a substance that buries reality which is the "Same old trip" being bought. When you are in the initial phase of any self-destructive activity you are "innocent" in your own mind and out of reach of thoughts of change. From lawful to vengeful to a thief you become until you realize that you are engaged to "no friend of mine", but find yourself already on the trip. I realize that all great songs, especially metal-rock songs are subject to ones personal perspective, but I found that often songs are written about an inner demon or struggle, sometimes it can be a struggle with another person but still the inner refection is the true subject |
