I believe this song is about false prophets. Like Jim Jones who convinced 900+ people to kill themselves. That's where "put the gun in my mouth and pull the trigger, I feel so alive here" came from. "The innocent observers will refuse to find the lie within" The observers were only hearing the prophecies of a liar. "Your vanity it seems has served you well" talks about alot of other tv evangelists that just want your money. Selling books and building mega churches. Selling their vanity on tv.
