When I first heard this song I instantly thought of the 2016 elections between Hillary and Trump. For a lot of people picking a side was hard because people felt like they were picking the 'lesser of two evils'. Assuming that this song goes along with the topics of our world that are discussed throughout the album, there can be no doubt that this can be taken as a statement about the recent elections and politics in general. There always seems to be some scandal that obscures the image of a lot of politicians. Specifically Hillary with the emails and Trump and his constant spew of unfiltered views. There are two ways to skin tonight Let’s see whose road gets there faster This is a game, no wrongs, no right Only a winner and a loser You and I, oh you and I We’re not that different, you and I Oh you and I, you and I We’re not that different, you and I I see that the narrator could be a politician like Trump and that he's realizing that really he's just as bad as her and every politician after. He accepts it because he knows that regardless of what political party you're in it's really all about winning, and they're both willing to do what it takes to win, regardless if it hurts people. |

This song has been discussed before and it's about a comedy sex blog one of Dan Smith's ( Singer ) friends ran. It's unclear about who the friend is but Dan has talked about the "comedy sex song" before. It's a catalogue of modern mistakes Her words and legs wrapped around each man Leaving stories like digital crumbs As she turns these nights into literature The song tells you about what was on the blog based on these lyrics. It was most likely that Dan's friend wrote about her sexual encounters and turned them into so-called "literature" or comedy. The overall tone of the song changes when there is a backstory to the lyrics, Dan is praising this blog that his friend made and somehow wrote a well-written song about it. Finally, the title Oil on Water comes from how the fact that water and oil don't mix and just sit on top of each other, similar to how two bodies lay on top of each other during intercourse. |
