There are several ELO songs that about troubles in a relationship with a girl. I have enjoyed reading the other interpretations of this song here, but I have to believe it's best to go with the simplest thing. This song is about a guy who believes that he is losing his girl and he is pleading with her not to end it.

His crops died because of the early snow. He will starve to death because of this, but I believe that he could hunt for game to stay alive. The lyrics speak of the girl as if she was but a person in a story that he had heard. She, he believes, will come to him as an angel and take him away from his hard and bitter, lonely life. I believe this song is about a single man who has found himself, alone, in the Nebraska territory. A man who longs for companionship, but has not found it. His loneliness has destroyed his spirit for survival, so he will not hunt for game this winter. He will let himself starve to death instead. I find this a beautiful, but very sad song on many levels, as my interpretation is but one of many different ways that one could interpret this song.

@[orion720:25561] I believe that this song could be about an Antarctic expedition gone terribly wrong. I can also see this song as being about the Donner party and the horrors that were endured by them. Either way, excellent song.
