The stand-out line is “don’t let the days go by” it’s the author’s way of saying “live life” other lines just came from the subconscious / ether, like on automatic. The line “I’ll never forget just where you’re at” is a way of saying ‘I’m always thinking of you’ |

As others have said, this is morbid. It’s about how long it would die to just lay down in a field. The menacing bits are ‘thrown here of left to freeze or to thaw’ and ‘a thousand teeth and yours among them’ Other than this it really is about how long it’d take to die if you just lay down in a field, and after this, it also speculates just how long it’d take for the dead bodies to be found. Sometimes a passed person can be ‘home’ to a left behind living person, hence the line “I’d be home with you” |

This lyric uses strong Biblical imagery. For example “rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree” Evokes the snake tempting Eve while hanging down from the forbidden tree that stood in the Garden of Eden. The whole song is written from the perspective of a spirit/ghost visiting/coming to and influencing/corrupting a woman. It would read “just to come and sit by/under your window” but window didn’t ‘scan’ so the woman changed it to door that the spirit is camping out by. |

This song, the orig & cover, is about being stuck / dumb stuck in awe, so much that it restores your faith in either God, or just life a little.
It’s about being suddenly stuck with inspiration out of the blue / heavens “the baffled king composing hallelujah” creatively. Creative inspiration, “flag on the marble arch” & Comparing this with the experience of love &/ more accurately passionate feelings. The highs & lows (madness & surrendering or being a hostage to it) - “she tied you to her...broke your crown...cut your hair”. It kind of puts you in your place.
Buckley develops the love part in his rendition to further compare being blindsided by love with say suddenly a poem / song formed in your head at night as Cohen had, by moonlight.

She’s merely appealing to him to see her love for him as enough, to protect him from an inevitability she sadly saw unfolding. |

Forgive me if this has been mentioned previously. At first glance it seems like a woman wanting to convince herself she’s ‘a doll’ that she’d win the cake walk. In one sense it’s true, the protagonist wants to feel good about herself.
I think the cake walk was Courtney’s creative spring board tbh.
The “dog bait” phrase is a hint by Courtney. Her “bio dad” Hank said he; “used to control her with dogs”. It’s been said Courtney was & is afraid of dogs.
So this song is as much about being a victim of men who treat women/girls as play things, dolls, as any wish to be beautiful and therefore loved/adored. The two are closely intertwined. The source of the ‘ache’ pain & longing. And the pain of any kind of abuse.
I think the faking it line may be to do with her & survivors/experiencers in general not being believed.
As an aside, there’s a line about “big veins” it’s her proof against her being a heroin addict and therefore it’s ‘obvious’ Frances shouldn’t have been taken away.
I was a fan at 16, late to the show, but I did have a magazine poster of Courtney baring her arms with her massive healthy veins from the time.
Apologies if I’m off the mark it’s 20 yrs since I first heard that song, and I finally get it.
