I take this from this song that I love dearly. First two sections he's explaining that she gets distressed and wants to break free from the things that make her feel as though she can't move or is trapped (i.e. like a baby gets distressed with discomfort, or an animal covered in tar can't move). It's a funny old world, full of headaches in turn to me means, trying to change or get out of a situation that makes you feel trapped can sometimes cause unwanted distress in other ways. It's a struggle basically. Especially when you just can't bust through the negative feelings you have (every recording you keep distorting, like an astronaut, going back to the first part). The chorus is saying, "If you need space, I'm going to be here for you regardless of where you feel you need to go." I don't think there is anything negative about it. I think he's saying, if you need time, take it, I'll take it too and make the best of it (WE can be astronauts). It is Okay to feel nothing at all. Then I think he is explaining that he feels distant from her in the second section. ...searching for safety, somewhere on mars etc. I think he's saying, well you're looking for something out there that you already have. Your body is here but your mind is always elsewhere searching. The interesting part is that he says But if I'm mistaken, instead of But if I'm Not Mistaken. That could be a lyrical shortcut since Not mistaken would have been a lot harder for the tempo. In any case we ultimately hear the chorus again and he reminds the listener that it is ok. All in all, I think this song is about letting someone know that if they are feeling trapped or stuck, I am there for them and they can have as much space as they need. I'll even be there in case they decide to need me as a companion, but if not, it is okay. It is okay to feel nothing at all. Then again maybe it could just be about someone wanting the other person to get high with them and say screw this hard life. Up to you all I guess. |
