The song's power makes me feel freedom, defiance, and strength. Joy and relief too. This fits the words. I agree with a comment here...one can call this song about those who don't conform. People are afraid to NOT conform. But the nonconformists sometimes get free of the strictures of society and show the way. THEN everyone who stuck to their boring path envies them and keeps asking them, as though they were gurus, 'what's the secret? How do I live to get the freedom, passion and joy you have?' The song is in A major, a bold key where a strong D major and D ninth fit well and a supporting floor E major form a solid floor for the song...............so we bravely take off for FLIGHT and FREEDOM and the joy of taking that risk!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

@[kc777:24266] I agree and wrote a comment to the effect that no piece of art has an 'objective meaning', even to the creator of the art...........it means to me whatever it means to me and to you whatever it means to you. My gosh, if we analyze it for 'objective meaning', then let's do math or science............that's not what art is for. |

Music is art. If one looks at, hears, or otherwise senses a piece of art done by someone else, then the artist no longer owns it. Thus, the 'meaning' of a piece of art depends upon WHO views (or creates it) and WHEN that person views it or creates it. Even the creator may have DIFFERENT ideas about what the art feels like to him or her at different times. I have seen artists, when asked what a piece of art "means", answer, "I don't remember" or "I don't know". So as you read these thoughts about "Across the Universe" and its 'meaning', I'd encourage you to hear the song, including whatever you like (the vocal, the lyrics, the musicians, the arrangement) and decide FOR YOU at the time you hear it what it FEELS like. |
