I don't believe this song is about slavery, per se. It's too heart warming for that. I've always had this image in my mind of Cotton Jenny being an African-American beauty, living in a little pretty cottage on a hill, and she and the singer, both poor laborers, cheer each other up and love to have a good, intimate time. This song makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. |

I think it is fairly straightforward. "Hurry boy she's waiting there for you." *She* is Africa. I suspect the author of the lyrics had a special place in his heart for Africa. I never, ever thought this song was about a woman. When I hear it, my mind is instantly taken to another part of this world. |

You're all making it more complicated than it is. Lightfoot is not complicated. Besides, he already told us the meaning of his lyrics. "Lying back in a satin dress in a room where you do what you don't confess." Masturbation. I think it is as he says--wondering what she's doing, and that's that. I guess we all have our own interpretations, though. |
