Bette Midler – The Rose Lyrics 8 years ago
there are so many songs about love, loss of love, looking for love in all the wrong places et al.. this song covers them all with lyrics that read more like a poem than a song re no repeated verses. Love can be like a river that drowns, like a metaphorical razor that wounds the soul, causes an endless hunger via unrequited love, and then finally one partner sees their love as having the ability to blossom while the other partner only sees the unplanted seeds of love.

This is one of those 'go to' songs, summoned when dealing with a powerful loss of a loved one, family member or life partner.

Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics 8 years ago
I watched a chat show with Paul Simon as a guest and he flat out said that this song is about a very close friend/fellow musicians struggle with his Autistic son. If you follow the lyrics they describe the symptoms of severe autism, which at the time guaranteed that those afflicted were afflicted for life.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 8 years ago
My Dad was diagnosed as having terminal lung to bone cancer and died 2 months after his diagnosis. Two months later my Mom passed of the exact same illness as well 2 months after her diagnosis. My Dad's death blew a hole in her soul, she showed no signs of illness. My Dad was terrified when diagnosed and had very little time to make amends. My Mom was thrilled when diagnosed and very happily followed him into the dark.

This song is very literal in that the lyrics tell a very simple story shared by legions of people. It's one of those 'go to' songs when one is faced with losing a loved one, family member or life partner.

Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics 8 years ago
This is one of those songs that can be very easily be adapted to any situation that involves loss. A loved one, family member or life partner. Damien's voice is powerful yet modest and shows no pretence ensuring that the song appeals to a much larger demographic. The song is highly memorable and like others it, The Rose, Angel et al will be remembered and summoned when one is faced with loss for the first time.

Bette Midler – The Rose Lyrics 8 years ago
@[chetchetstein:24062] this poem, called a Song, is for those that don't act when they see someone they fancy. They overthink it and end up walking away believing they'd be denied the others attentions. When in fact so many walk away, that the object of many's attention feels unattractive.

My life partner told me on our first date that it took him 3 months to get the nerve to approach me. Hell when he said "excuse me", I looked up and fell instantly in love. So don't walk away into your dissatisfaction.

Their is a 'song', though most would call it a poem, by WH Auden, called Under an Abject Willow. Check it out as it reads like an 19th century version of The Rose. Here are the lyrics...

Underneath an abject willow,
Lover, sulk no more:
Act from thought should quickly follow.
What is thinking for?
Your unique and moping station
Proves you cold;
Stand up and fold
Your map of desolation.

Bells that toll across the meadows
From the sombre spire
Toll for these unloving shadows
Love does not require.
All that lives may love; why longer
Bow to loss
With arms across?
Strike and you shall conquer.

Geese in flocks above you flying.
Their direction know,
Icy brooks beneath you flowing,
To their ocean go.
Dark and dull is your distraction:
Walk then, come,
No longer numb
Into your satisfaction.

Adele – Rolling in the Deep Lyrics 8 years ago
Remember, Adele has suffered from body shaming, her own issues about her weight, and ultimately a weight loss which she probably felt necessary. If this song is biographical and pre-weight loss, she may have fallen in love with someone who attached himself to her because he saw her potential for major fame and the resulting cash fall. No one can be in a relationship with someone they feel unattractive and are unable to see past the exterior to see her fabulous true self. They inevitably start dropping verbal bombs, brief and usually in passing.

Her ex really hurt her and as a result she probably has a hard time believing in love. Sad.

@[stevedhondt:24033] wonderful response. Adele's lyrics are like a breath of fresh air. There are no lyrics in this song that can be misinterpreted, perhaps because the unlucky soul that this song is about is the opposite, so by writing crystal clear lyrics w/o underlying messages, she's alerting him to her growth, which is a silver lining to what must have been a nightmare of a relationship.

@[MrMojoRisin5552:24011] This song is about Autism. A friend of Paul Simon's had it, the condition fascinated him. Forever locked in a world where he could hear w/o listening, talk w/o communicating. It's a very touching tribute to an illness at a time when so little was known about autism.
