| Pretty sure that he’s dyeing. He has people to thank but he can’t write letters because he’s not ready to accept it. His friends are on the edge of an old graveyard sitting on a porch. They live near a cemetery and are just living life still. He feels like writing letters is like giving up and describing his life in some last chance effort and once they are done that he is done. She told him he better do it before he can’t, but that he needs to accept it first so he can move on. He’s trying to enjoy life, and falls in love with the girl and he slowly comes to peace with death. Eventually he dies and he’s buried. The last lines “the distance between us stays. Close but not too close, far but not too far away” really have a lot of meaning behind them. They will be separated by his death, but he is buried just out in the old graveyard near her so he will never be too far away. That was my interpretation, however there are literally a million ways to interpret music, and it’s kind of a bummer to assume that they meant any one single thing. I could be completely wronged, so really it is what you make of it! I love this song, it’s poetic and sad, but happy all the same. It reminds me of the process of coming to terms with death and being thankful for your life and what you have. | |
