| John Prine – Pretty Good Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
It seems to me to be about how the good and the bad kind of intertwine, and how this is difficult to express, but maybe just kind of superficial anyway. It's good to have a friend, but he's a car dealer, and you only talk a couple times a year. That sets up the whole thing, like these kind of superficial conversations you have with people, that could go deeper, but don't. "Pretty good, not bad, can't complain. Actually, everything is about the same" He meets a girl from Venus, a goddess, insides made of gold, like the epitome of feminine beauty, but, it's not a love song to her, it's just a stanza. It's great to have been there, but she did what she did. Apparently Molly was a Labrador that ran off and came back with puppies, but mixed breed. so, kind of a mixed blessing like everything else in this song. I liked this song, but that verse seemed out of line, until I learned that dog story. It made the song almost self referential, it sounds bad, but it's not, but it's not good either. The mixed blessing theme is then reinforced with the mish-mash of religious references in the last verse. Each has their good and their bad, and in the end they're all pretty similar. |

| The Cowboy Junkies – Ring on the sill Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
I'm thinking of the long siege to come and I'm thinking of the long road ahead and the strength we'll need just to reach the end Looking for the balance between this fear that I feel And a love that has graced my life I never thought I'd feel this way. It cuts right through me. I don't know there's anything left of me to hold on to. To me it's about the honeymoon being over, and the work that comes to stay with someone who may be flawed, recognizing my own flaws as well. It's the day to day, the dishes stacked high, the love has waned the ring is on the sill. It's not bad, it's not good, it's just waiting to get what needs to be done done and waiting to die. |

| Modest Mouse – Other People's Lives Lyrics | 7 years ago |

Possibly this is about a homosexual experiment. Keep in mind people can write about "other people's lives" Towit: "Other people's lives seem more interesting" where the other people are the homosexuals. "I was excited, but usually I hate to see them" Meaning possibly penises. "He did some speed" common in the gay community "He went down to Thailand" known for ladyboys "Always steals his kisses" Ben Harper reference, or than this guy was forward with the narrator. "He's been in the army" but he isn't anymore, like he joined to be around men, but got kicked out because of homosexuality. "out of existence or down the road forever" The out of existence might be from the shame of the encounter, or "down the road forever" would be to go all the way and be gay/open |

| Bob Dylan – Sweetheart Like You Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
It's about a beautiful sweet girl in an expensive exclusive bar. The kind of place where you have to be very rich, by doing some evil deed, employing a lot of people, or "playing your harp till your lips bleed" Maybe it's something like a hollywoo awards show He's only flattering her by asking the question. He knows, the answer, what she's there for. She only wants half, the fame and the money, unlike the girl that looked like her that wanted the whole man. |
