This song is just such beautiful sadness, almost sounds like it is Nanna's swan song. She has said it was her favorite song to perform on the album, it was the last one they wrote and recorded and they always close their sets with it including their very last one to date. I think this confirms my ideas about what they intend the song to mean to their fans. I feel like it is about having writers block, that frustration that must have come with finishing beneath the skin. They were under so much pressure to make another "Little Talks" and another great album to follow up their first...But I think through their huge initial tour and missing home so much, they and she were just over it and could have easily at the time just been done with it all instead of maintain and expand their newfound star status and tour all over the globe again. I can't imagine the stress that built up during their tour and in the recording of this album, it must have been all consuming. They were running out of ideas and digging deep for another powerful song to finish the album and communicate fully their wild and stormy journey from just kids having a fun little band to international super stars with massive hype. I think the song suggests their fear of not succeeding and living up to expectations, the fear of disappearing into history as just another one hit wonder. They want you to look away and leaving them with their human dignity and privacy in case it all comes crashing down around them. A ray of hope is expressed by Nanna in the end, as she sings the final epilogue...She asks us to be patient, to wait for time to inspire her again in a couple more years... "to keep her in our clouded minds" to not take her or her wonderful band for granted, and maybe they will make another awesome album and keep this rock star thing going for another trip around the world... |

I happen to agree that the song is about mans stubborn will to dominate nature. To subvert and dominate the natural order. "My head is an animal" means to me the animalistic urges always lurking just underneath our civilized human exterior that we must work constantly to suppress...And of course also our instinct to dominate the planet and everything on it, our war not only being with the forces of wild nature but with each other and ourselves, our own animal nature. Could it be as well that Nanna is the beast and the 4 dirty paws are the other guys in the band, here to illuminate this truth and save us from ourselves? |
