"I wanted to share" in the first stanza tells us this is the past, and he desired to share his California cruising with her. Pretty straight forward. "I was second college bound, and dreaming of what could be, wanting to move with you." He gives a specific time in his past that he was wanting to spend time with her. "I found you like a culinary gem in a stucco-pink strip mall, I found you as the curtain’s coming down on a melancholy romcom." Well, when you find a fine restaurant (culinary gem) in a dump (strip mall), it is a nice surprise, right? So, that is compared in a simile (uses "like"). All of it so far is just a recollection of how he felt at the beginning of the relationship. The tricky part is: "Lost stars are coming on/Lost causes calling on." End in sight? Fear? Self doubt? Does he think the Maroon 5 song "Lost Stars" is going to happen to them? |
